Just looking over the nominations this year and i can see some hotly contested awards being fought over.

As soon as i have the show guide it'll be posted on the front page. What's everyone's thoughts so far... :P

I still think there needs to be some sort of hybrid awards as alot of bands these days cover too many genre's to be plugged straight into one type. That's just my opinion.

i'm kind of disappointed with the nominees this year. i'm not knocking any of the bands who did get nominated, but i thought that a lot of musicians that really deserved to be in there missed out.

and fourth floor collapse getting nominated for best rock act for what, the third year in a row? i seriously hope that is a display of an ironic sense of humour rather than anything else.

it seems that in this dj era, the tag rock basically only means that the band uses real drums.

yeah rock is a pretty broad category. to some people rock is fourth floor, to others it is subtruck. you're never gunna please everyone and there's always gonna be talent that goes unrecognised.

i know what ya mean about hybrids magz - for example subtruck being nominated in both rock and metal plus rollerskates being nominated in both funk and electronic. it's good that bands are blurring the lines though, the fact that it's not really condusive to the "lets put everything in a box" nature of awards isn't really of great concern to me. i don't think the answer is to create hybrid categories though - i mean where do you draw the line? MOST POPULAR NEW COUNTRY JAZZ METAL FUSION ARTIST?? ;)

having said all that, and as cynical as i am about awards, i think the nominations are actually a little better than usual. a few "what thes..." but, from memory, far less than previous years...

There is also the band that obviously nabbed a zillion copies of XPress and got their mates to nominate them in every category, same as they used to do, only they were a different band back then. Lame.

mike, the nominations don't work that way (or at least not anymore). nomination forms are only sent by mail to WAM members (ie. band members and industry people), they are the ones who make the nominations and there's no way you can send more than one entry as each form is brandished with the member's name. if WAM receive two forms from the same person, or a form from a person that is not a WAM member, then it is not counted.

it is the winners that are decided by public voting (with the exception of a couple of industry awards) and that's when losers start rounding up copies of xpress. why you would bother is beyond me.

are the nominations available on the web anywhere? I'm curious to see what has prompted all this discussion.

I recall a story about a chap from a novelty-punkish act, who i think are long defunct now, bringing into the WAM office a plastic bag full of xpress voting forms filled out for his band. Not sure whether he was trying to make a comment about the voting system, or he actually thought they would accept the forms, but it does illustrate what a joke the process of old was.

they're in xpress this week, i don't think wam have posted them on the net.

i could have sworn that when i filled out my nomination form that there was a gothic/industrial category but i could be wrong. perhaps they simply just didn't get enough votes cast in this category to make it worthwhile?? not sure on that one.
